Priscilla Of Boston Proves They Are a Bride's First Choice

There is only one thing I love more than a fashion show and that is watching a bridal fashion show. All of the crowd excitement, visual thrills and riveting atmosphere which make a runway presentation one of the most extraordinary forms of entertainment are doubled when models parade - one after beautiful other - down the runway in breathtaking white, off white and ivory gowns.

This past Saturday, even the occasional prickly fashion editor and miscellaneous somber fashionistas were caught gleaming in the warmth of the bright lights at the Priscilla Of Boston Bridal Group Spring 2010 show - surrounded by ethereal music, energized by the hushed witty comments of the photographers, awestruck by the elegant setting of 583 Park Avenue and delighted by the gorgeous gowns. The feature-length runway presentation, complete with a fifteen-minute intermission courtesy of Sofia Mini Champagne, Acqua Panna water and Crumbs cupcakes (yum!) was an absolute delight, showing six different lines for every style of bride and budget out there. But even catering to those who may not be getting married in the next year, some of the shorter dresses and deliciously colorful bridesmaids and rehearsal-dinner ensembles looked ready to walk any glamourous red carpet, or go out for an extra special night on the town.

This season saw the introduction of the new Jewel by Priscilla Of Boston line, an exquisite collection of wedding dresses with crystal details, fitted bodices, bare shoulders and pretty detailing that opened the show. The models looked radiant sporting easy, sexy hair and natural but glowy make-up, which made this line perfect for the woman who sees herself as an "All American Princess Bride".

Next was the turn of Reverie by Melissa Sweet, which in my view caters more to the "It Girl Bride" with some hip touches including hair in high updos, flowers and hair nets, shimmering party make-up and even black satin pumps. Among the stunning gowns, my personal favorite turned out to be an ivory version of a Flamenco dress, complete with flared skirt and beaded lace.

The Vineyard Collection, designer by Mark Brower, started out with the models wearing a dozen bridesmaid-slash-cocktail dresses, walking down the runway to a version of No Doubt's heartbreak anthem Don't Speak. These clothes - in shades of amethyst and lapis - would be perfect for a night out as well as a bride's rehearsal dinner and were complemented well by the models' soft pulled back hair, easy glowing make-up and matte red lips, while little strappy bejeweled sandals completed the looks. Best summed up as the "Glamorous Bride" collection, I found that a few of the looks reminded me of the timeless elegance of Halston.

For the Priscilla Of Boston presentation the girls looked very "Rock & Roll Bride", with teased hair, 1950s eye make up, little sweetheart pouty lips and jeweled hair pieces. But the gowns, of course, were pure glamour, with feather details, Alencon lace and accents of non-traditional but oh-so-right mint and petal pink. A personal favorite remains the Strapless Silk Organza gown with crystal-decorated petals (pictured above).

Melissa Sweet pushed the envelope with their "Fashionista Bride", the kind of woman who would unabashedly wear wooden platforms, extended eye make-up, a side bun and even a net complete with birdie as her coiff to her rehearsal dinner. But once the birdies came off and the beautiful wedding gowns hit the runway, the looks were glowing and polished with petal details, tone on tone pearl accents and even a giant silk taffeta rose sculpted into the skirt of a magnificent gown.

Closing the show, the Platinum collection - aptly titled "Divas" - showed a confident woman, with a twist updo, natural lips and smokey blue eye make-up, wearing alluring, stylish gowns. What I would personally describe as "Heiress Bride" style, some of the looks would be perfect on a true Hollywood diva at Academy Awards time. Another one of the show's personal favorites was among the finale looks - a crystal-embroidered Organza T-shirt worn over a full Silk Taffeta skirt, with a faux ostrich fur topper.

Kudos to the Priscilla Of Boston Bridal Group for going the earth-conscious/animal friendly way, while still making sure that every bride look like a million dollars!

Energy Star proposes changes to lighting program

he proposal is the result of the partnership between the DOE and the EPA, signed on September 30, 2009, which passed operational control of the Energy Star program to the EPA (see Related Stories).

The proposal indicates the ways in which the various parts of the Energy Star lighting program will be integrated. Integration will include “a specification revision process that is open and transparent, incorporating the input of partners and stakeholders and allowing adequate transition time.” The agencies are also seeking to “remove any overlap or contradiction among specifications so as to eliminate confusion.” There are currently four separate Energy Star performance specifications that address lighting:

Solid State Lighting specification (SSL v1.1, v1.2 draft)
Limited to luminaires employing SSL technology and addresses residential, commercial and industrial fixture applications. Developed by DOE. As part of the transition, DOE will complete SSL version 1.2, which includes additional outdoor light fixture categories.
Residential Light Fixture specification (RLF v4.2, v4.3 draft)
Addresses light fixtures sold in the residential segment of the lighting industry, using a variety of technologies including SSL. The EPA introduced SSL into its RLF v4.2 in June 2008 (marking the start of the so-called “Energy Star Wars” controversy).
Integral LED Lamps
Focuses on LED replacements for general service lamps, reflector lamps, and decorative lamps. The final version of the criteria was released on December 3, 2009 and will go into effect on August 31, 2010.
Compact Fluorescent Lamp specification (CFL V4.0)

The new proposal address lighting in each of the following three areas:

Residential light fixtures
Residential (replacement) lamps
Commercial/industrial light fixtures

The first of these, residential light fixtures, has been the source of most disagreement between advocates of the DOE and EPA approaches (SSL v1.1 and RLF v4.2, respectively).

In the short term, EPA and DOE are proposing to leave the RLF and SSL specifications in place. However, eligibility to qualify LED-based light fixtures under RLF V4.2 will be limited to decorative fixtures, as defined in a document (LSD 51-2009) co-authored by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) and the American Lighting Association (ALA).

This change clarifies EPA’s existing RLF V4.2 specification, and makes the number of fixtures that could qualify much smaller and more specific than formerly proposed.

For fixtures that are currently covered by the existing SSL specification, the proposal says that “no immediate changes to the performance levels, fixture categories, or test procedures are warranted. The existing test procedure for fixtures, LM-79, provides a strong and well recognized technical basis for evaluating the existing SSL fixture categories and will remain in place.”

For the longer term, EPA will initiate a formal specification revision effort, which among other things will reference a national standard for LED light engine testing (currently at the draft stage).

EPA plans to release a draft specification by mid February 2010, which will be followed by a stakeholder input process involving multiple draft proposals, comment periods and stakeholder meetings before revisions are finalized and effective dates are established.

モバイルコンピュータを見る視点

モバイルコンピュータと言っても、人により使い方はさまざまで、最善のスタイルはないと思います。私がモバイルコンピュータを見る視点は、重量、電源、データの３つです。

重量 - （キーワード：車移動、屋内移動、電車移動）

重量が軽いにこしたことはありませんが、車移動や屋内移動（自宅内、オフィス内移動）の場合は、3kg級のノートパソコンでもOK。とくに屋内移動が主なら、重くてもフロッピーディスクドライブやCD-ROMドライブ内臓タイプのほうが便利。逆に、電車移動が主の場合は2kgでも辛く、可能なら1kg前後の機種がベター。

電源 - （キーワード：移動先使用、車移動、移動中使用）

バッテリーも長時間もつにこしたことはありません。ただ、持ち運ぶが、移動中はほとんど使わず、移動先の電源があるところで使用するという人も多いはず。この場合、バッテリーが何時間持つかは、あまり意味がありません。むしろ、ACアダプタの大きさと、その重量が重要。また、車で移動するなら、移動中に充電することもできます。逆に、車以外の移動中に使うことが多いのであれば、バッテリー持続時間はもちろんのこと、乾電池で動く機種にしておくと、バッテリーが切れた時、買い足せるので安心です。

データ - （キーワード：やりとり、変換、一元化）

モバイルコンピュータと別に、据置型のパソコンも併せて使う場合、相互にデータのやりとりが発生します。方法として、ケーブル接続や赤外線通信というのもありますが、毎日の作業となると、結構めんどうです。フラッシュメモリーカードを介したやりとりのほうが快適です。また、データをやりとりする場合、動作するアプリケーションが異なってしまうと、データの変換作業が必要です。できるだけ、同じアプリケーションが動くように考慮するか、テキスト形式のような、汎用性の高いデータで管理する必要があります。

こうしたわずらわしさを考えると、1台ですべてこなすことができれば、それにかなうものはありません。

モバイルコンピュータは本当にサブマシンとして魅力的なのか？

デスクトップや据置型のノートパソコンを持っていて、さらにポケットコンピュータに興味がある人も多いはず。技術的興味ならいいのですが、すべてのコンピュータに役割を与えて、実用的に使いこなそうとすると、それなりに大変です。

1人1台がベスト

やむを得ず2台のマシンを使い分けるならともかく、無理して2台のマシンを使う必要はないと思います。理由は、データの管理が大変になるからです。一元管理はやはりラク。パソコンは、1人1台がベストで、1人2台になると、かえって使いにくくなると思います。2台にする余裕があるなら、同じ機種にして、非常時のバックアップとして考えたほうがいいでしょう。

紙の手帳やメモは便利

手書き認識やコンパクトなキーボードの技術がずいぶん進んでいます。しかし、紙の手帳やメモの機動性、瞬発力にはかないません。そもそもメモは、すぐに捨ててしまうような類のデータですから、デジタルデータに変換する必要がありません。これまで捨てていた情報を、何かに活かしていこうというような積極的理由でもない限り、メモを手書き認識させるなどという労力は、意味がありません。

機種選び

モバイルコンピュータにも、いろいろな種類のものが売り出されるようになりました。選べるのはうれしいのですが、選ぶのに大変な労力がかかるようになりました。

ノート - 3kg前後

省スペースな据置型のパソコンとして使われることが多くなっています。電車での持ち運びには不向きですが、車移動や屋内移動がメインならこれで十分。フロッピーディスクやCD-ROMドライブが内臓されたものが、収まりがよくて便利でしょう。
最近では、デスクトップとの価格差が減ってきた（１２～１５万円の機種もある）ので、デスクトップをやめてノート1台にすることも可能です。

サブノート - 2kg前後

電車でも携帯できるは、このクラスからでしょう。しかし、移動中、どこでも使用できるというものでもありません。移動先で、電源を借りて使用するというのが、最も一般的な使い方になると思いますので、ACアダプタのサイズもチェック要。
スケジュール管理ソフトが添付されていたりしますが、このタイプのノートパソコンを持ち歩いていて、スケジュールの確認をしようなどというのは、よほどスケジュールがあいている暇な人しかできません。紙の手帳のほうが便利でしょう。

ミニノート - 1kg前後

レッツノートミニや、リブレット、インタートップなど。これならいつでもどこでも使えそうな気になりがちですが、バッテリーが大したことないので、オプションのバッテリーを予備に持つなりなんなり、工夫とお金がかかります。
また、そこまでやっても、ポインティングデバイスが使いにくかったり、キーが打ちにくかったりと、使いこなすにはそれなりの労力がかかります。
本当に、移動中に使う必要があるのか検討しておかないと、単なるおもちゃになってしまいます。スケジュール管理がメインなら、紙の手帳のほうが便利でしょう。

ポケット - 500g前後

カシオペアやモバイルギア、オアシスポケット、200LX、ザウルスなど。いつでも使おうとするなら、バッテリーの持続時間や、乾電池が使えるかなどをチェックする必要があります。また、外出先で電子メールのやりとりをしたいのなら、モバイルギアがお薦めです。
ザウルスは、スケジュール管理などの管理機能に優れていますが、紙の手帳に勝るメリットがあるのかどうかの検討も必要だと思います。
ザウルスを除いて、この分野のユーザーは、マニアが多く、いくら「便利」だといっても、使いこなすまでに相当の苦労があった可能性があります。

現在の私

これまで、NEC のPC-9801NSL、Let's NOTE mini、NEC のPC-9821Ltなどのサブノートパソコン、オアシスポケット3（ポケット）と使ってきました。それぞれ、いいところも悪いところもありましたが、現在はモバイル機器を使っていません。

Opera Softwareは12日 (ノルウェー時間)、ブラウジング速度を向上させるオンラインサービス「Opera Turbo」を発表した。16日からスペイン・バルセロナで開催される見本市「Mobile World Congress」において、デモが実施される予定。

Opera Turboは、Operaブラウザなど対応クライアントとインターネットの間に設置され一種の代理サーバとして機能する、サーバサイドの最適化技術。サポートされるクライアントはOpera DesktopとOpera Mobile、Opera Devices SDKの3種。Opera Turboのデータ処理により、それらクライアントに転送されるデータは最高で80%減少、リソースが限られているデバイス上においてもダウンロード速度やパフォーマンスの向上が見込めるという。AjaxやFlashといった動的なWeb技術も、完全にサポートされるとのこと。

Hà Nội (TTXVN) - Vắng các tên tuổi đã thành danh, tại SEA Games 24 lần này, wushu Việt Nam đang trông cậy vào nhiều gương mặt mới trong độ tuổi U20.

Các vận động viên trẻ của Việt Nam vừa có đợt thử sức khá thành công tại giải vô địch wushu thế giới 2007, sự kiện chính trị, vừa kết thúc tại Trung Quốc, với vị trí thứ 3 giành cho tuyển.

Tại sân chơi có tới hơn 1.000 vận động viên thuộc 87 nước, vùng lãnh thổ tham dự, ba nhà quán quân mới của wushu Việt Nam đã lộ diện gồm Phạm Quốc Khánh, huy chương vàng nội dung Nam đao; Nguyễn Thị Bích, huy chương vàng tán thủ hạng 48kg và Lương Thị Hoa huy chương vàng hạng 60kg.

Ngoài 3 nhà vô địch trẻ thay thế lứa đàn anh, đàn chị Thúy Hiền, Quốc Vinh, Mỹ Đức, Ngọc Oanh, Thanh Xuân, wushu Việt Nam còn có một số gương mặt tiềm năng khác như các cô gái ở nội dung Taolu nữ, sự kiện chính trị,bao gồm Vũ Trà My với 2 huy chương bạc, 1 huy chương đồng tại giải vô địch thế giới; Vũ Thùy Linh với 1 bạc, 1 đồng.

Võ sỹ tán thủ nam Phan Anh Yên, tuy chỉ đứng thứ 5 ở hạng cân 60kg nhưng được đánh giá là hy vọng số 1 của Việt Nam tại SEA Games 24.

Có thành công bước đầu ở đẳng cấp thế giới nhưng để duy trì được sự ổn định ở SEA Games 24, các vận động viên trẻ của wushu Việt Nam còn nhiều việc phải làm.

Ở nội dung Taolu, tuyển Việt Nam sẽ phải đối đầu với các đối thủ khó chơi là Malaixia và Philíppin - đều có huy chương vàng tại giải vô địch thế giới 2007. Với tán thủ, do chỉ còn 6 bộ huy chương (3 nam, 3 nữ) nên sự cạnh tranh sẽ khốc liệt hơn ở SEA Games 23 (có 7 bộ huy chương). Các võ sỹ Philíppin rất mạnh ở hạng cân 52kg, trong khi các võ sỹ Thái Lan lại tỏ ra đáng gờm ở cả 3 hạng cân 52kg, 56kg, 65kg.

Tại SEA Games 23, wushu Việt Nam từng giành 7 huy chương vàng, 9 huy chương bạc và 4 huy chương đồng./.

TP Hồ Chí Minh (TTXVN) - Bộ trưởng Thương mại Hoa Kỳ Carlos M. Gutierrez cùng đại diện 22 công ty Hoa Kỳ thăm Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh từ ngày 6 đến 8/11 đã có các cuộc tiếp xúc với cộng đồng doanh nghiệp cùng các sở, ngành Thành phố.

Tại các cuộc tiếp xúc này, hai bên đã trao đổi cụ thể về những dự án và cơ hội đầu tư tại thành phố trong các lĩnh vực dịch vụ, địa ốc, hạ tầng đô thị, khách sạn, hàng không, hóa chất, công nghiệp kỹ thuật cao.

Hội đàm giữa Bộ Công Thương Việt Nam và Bộ Thương mại Hoa Kỳ diễn ra ngày 7/11 đã đề cập đến các giải pháp tháo gỡ những vấn đề vướng mắc, dỡ bỏ các rào cản thương mại và mối quan ngại của Việt Nam xung quanh việc Hoa Kỳ áp dụng thuế chống bán phá giá đối với các sản phẩm thủy hải sản, thực hiện Chương trình giám sát hàng dệt may xuất khẩu của Việt Nam.

Cũng trong ngày 7/11, phát biểu trước hơn 600 sinh viên của Trường đại học Bách Khoa Thành phố, Bộ trưởng Gutierrez cho biết ông và Đại sứ Hoa Kỳ tại Việt Nam đã thảo luận về việc thực hiện thêm nhiều chương trình để tăng cường cơ hội học tập cho sinh viên Việt Nam tại các trường đại học của Hoa Kỳ và ngược lại.

Tối cùng ngày, Chủ tịch UBND Thành phố Lê Hoàng Quân đã tiếp Bộ trưởng Gutierrez và các doanh nghiệp Hoa Kỳ. Tại đây, Bộ trưởng Gutierrez cho rằng cách giải quyết tốt nhất đối với vấn đề thâm hụt thương mại giữa hai nước là tăng cường xuất khẩu hàng hóa của Hoa Kỳ vào Việt Nam, thay vì các biện pháp bảo hộ và những rào cản thương mại đối với hàng xuất khẩu của Việt Nam như hiện Hoa Kỳ đang áp dụng. Ông chia sẻ mong muốn của Chủ tịch Lê Hoàng Quân về tăng cường quan hệ hợp tác thương mại và đầu tư giữa TP Hồ Chí Minh với các bang của Hoa Kỳ.

Chặn đứng một âm mưu gây rối an ninh trật tự

Hà Nội (TTXVN) - Thời gian vừa qua, các thế lực thù địch và bọn phản động lưu vong ở nước ngoài, cấu kết với bọn phản động lợi dụng tôn giáo và một số phần tử cơ hội chính trị trong nước đã âm mưu dụ dỗ, mua chuộc những người khiếu kiện, kích động họ tham gia biểu tình chống chính quyền ở Hà Nội và Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh. Tuy nhiên, các cơ quan chức năng của ta đã phát hiện kịp thời và chặn đứng âm mưu gây rối an ninh, trật tự này.

Để thực hiện ý đồ kích động những người khiếu kiện tiến hành biểu tình chống chính quyền, Thích Quảng Độ, kẻ cầm đầu cái gọi là “Viện hóa đạo Giáo hội Phật giáo Việt Nam Thống nhất”, một tổ chức tôn giáo không được thừa nhận ở Việt Nam đã bí mật cử Thích Không Tánh mang 300 triệu đồng ra Hà Nội để phát cho người khiếu kiện; đồng thời ngấm ngầm xúi giục số người khiếu kiện đang có mặt tại Hà Nội để họ thông báo, lôi kéo những người khiếu kiện ở các địa phương kéo về Hà Nội và Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh vào thời điểm chúng dự kiến tổ chức biểu tình.
